Ranec is Macedonian and means backpack. The product is based on the traditional basket weaving knowledge. By adapting this old craft to manufacture a new product, the tradition can be preserved and simultaneously integrated into contemporary culture. The backpack only uses rope and reed to create a cost-effective, locally made product.
This research focused on mixing materials and the idea of creating an object that could work as a series. After arriving at the work site, it became quiet clear that it is sensible to use the manufacturing process as a starting point to translate old craft traditions into the present. Sticking to the standard materials that are available for local craftsmen, extra costs and unnecessary organization is avoided.
